The use of magnet-based motor designs is one approach that is translating successfully to the automotive industry.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mce-hs-more\" style=\"height: 20px !important;\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Advanced material enabling lighter vehicles and higher efficiency motors include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High performance samarium cobalt<\/li>\n<li>Laminated magnet configurations<\/li>\n<li>Carbon fiber magnet retention<\/li>\n<li>Engineered titanium structures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Samarium Cobalt<\/h2>\n<p>The elevated temperatures of a vehicle drive train require magnets that can resist demagnetization. Samarium cobalt based magnets, such as Arnold\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arnoldmagnetics.com\/permanent-magnets\/recoma-35e-the-worlds-most-power-dense-samarium-cobalt-magnet-material\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RECOMA 35E<\/a>, maintain full magnetic output at high temperature and also have a low reversible temperature coefficient, making them a smart choice for motor designs.<\/p>\n<p>A typical motor can have an ambient temperature anywhere between -40\u00b0C and 125\u00b0C. When it\u2019s operating inside a vehicle\u2019s engine bay, temperatures can reach over 180\u00b0C, especially during engine soak. The lower reversible temperature coefficient of SmCo magnets results in much flatter operating characteristics across a temperature range.\u00a0<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Arnold_DS_RECOMA35E_FINAL6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download the RECOMA 35E data sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Laminated Magnets<\/h2>\n<p>When designing a PM motor with a non-conductive retaining sleeve, Joule losses can be a significant loss driver. Laminated magnets can reduce these losses.<\/p>\n<h2>Thin Stator Lamination Materials<\/h2>\n<p>Arnold\u2019s Precision Thin Metals Division manufactures precision rolled thin gauge metal strip products specifically for high frequency applications. The most applicable material for stator applications would be a 0.005\u201d\u2013 0.007\u201d thick NGOES. \u00a0These precision thin materials limit eddy currents, which reduces core losses in the stator, reducing heat and increasing energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<h2>Carbon Fiber<\/h2>\n<p>Carbon fiber material, such as Arnold\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arnoldmagnetics.com\/products\/wraptite-carbon-fibre-encapsulation-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wraptite sleeving<\/a>, offers a superior design alternative for high performance automotive applications in which rotational speeds exceed the capabilities of traditional materials. Carbon fiber materials not only provide additional strength above traditional nonmagnetic stainless steels and inconels, but they also eliminate eddy currents in the containment sleeve, which reduces heat generation and improves efficiency. In addition, Wraptite encapsulation reduces system weight for a better balance, enabling reliable operation in extreme conditions.\u00a0<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Arnold_DS_Wraptite_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download the Wraptite data sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Titanium<\/h2>\n<p>Titanium is lightweight and durable under harsh temperature and chemical conditions, making it an ideal material for light weighting applications.
